What is dental whitening and how does it work?

teeth whitening

Dental whitening is also known as bleaching. It is the process whereby a whitening agent is used to break down and remove stains that cause discoloration of the teeth, making them appear pale and dull. The peroxide-based bleaching gel acts by attacking stains, leaving the teeth brighter and whiter than before. Dental whitening can either be performed by professionals at the office, or at home using DIY bleaching kits.

Staining or discoloration of the teeth can result from excessive consumption of highly pigmented food and beverages such as coffee, tea, wine, some berries, food with artificial coloring added, candy and fizzy drinks. Smoking is one of the leading causes of dental staining and poor oral hygiene also contributes to the discoloration of the teeth.

How can one whiten teeth using bleaching kits at home?

Always use a whitening kit by a company recommended by leading dentists. The kit is relatively simple to use, and offers excellent results if used according to the instructions. The procedure involves application of a peroxide gel on to the facial surfaces of the teeth and leaving it on for at least 10-15 minutes while the bleach breaks up the stains. You can also request your dentist to custom fabricate a tray for your teeth, which can be used for the whitening procedure. It is important to note that patients that usually complain of teeth sensitivity must first consult their dentist to check whether or not their teeth are healthy enough to be whitening at home. Extra caution must also be exercised because certain peroxide agents can irritate the gums.
